A4H thanks lawmakers for showing strong support for the continued development and expansion of innovative payment models
Washington, D.C. (July 12, 2024) – Today, 14 members of Congress, led by Representatives Darin LaHood (R-IL) and Kim Schrier (D-WA), submitted a letter to Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), expressing strong support for innovative payment models that improve care, enhance patient experiences and reduce costs. In response to this letter, Accountable for Health (A4H) CEO Mara McDermott issued the following statement:
“Accountable for Health expresses our support and gratitude to Rep. LaHood, Rep. Schrier, and the 12 bipartisan members of Congress for their leadership in calling for continued investment in innovative payment models that improve care, enhance patient experiences and reduce costs. This letter highlights the overwhelming evidence that accountable care models, including Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) and specialty care models, improve care while saving money, and we are heartened to see these Congressional leaders emphasize this significant progress. With many models, including the ACO Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (REACH) Model and the Kidney Care Choices (KCC) Model, set to expire in 2026, we appreciate the bipartisan support in Congress for continuing to build on or extend these successful models and to prioritize new models to address the needs of rural communities. Accountable for Health thanks these lawmakers for supporting this important work to transform care delivery from its former fragmented state to a coordinated approach that empowers higher-quality, more cost-effective care.”

Accountable for Health is encouraged that CMS’s 2027 Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule recognizes the central role primary care must play in building a stronger, more sustainable Medicare program.
Accountable for Health welcomed 2024 ACO REACH results, which showed nearly $1 billion in net Medicare savings while maintaining strong quality, further demonstrating the value of accountable care. We also urged policymakers to modernize how accountable care models are evaluated so assessments better reflect today's landscape and the latest evidence.
